Tibet Visa

When entering Tibet from Nepal, Chinese Visas cannot be used. As such, the visa for Tibet must be obtained from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. As visa's are only issued on Mondays, Wednesday's and Thursdays (except if they fall on a Chinese Holiday), tours need to be arranged to suit these visa issue dates, i.e. any one going on a tour departing for Tibet from Nepal, needs to arrive in Kathmandu at least three days before entering Tibet.

When you confirm your trip with us, we will organize your Travel Permit for Tibet, Visa Approval Documents and apply to the Chinese embassy to obtain your visa. We will thus require your full passport details, 3 weeks prior to your arrival at Kathmandu. The final documentation will be done on arrival in Nepal.

Please note that visa for Tibet obtained elsewhere has still got to be endorsed by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

Your current Passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from the date of travel. The passport must also have more than two blank visa pages. We will require two full front passport photos taken against a clear background, in either colour or black and white. Photo's cannot be scanned and if digital, must be printed on gloss photo paper.

Day 4:  Lhasa

Today we will visit numerous temples and monasteries in Lhasa, such as Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery with its numerous colleges, and  Norbulingka, the summer palace of the Dalai Lama.

Day 5:  Lhasa

Visit Potala Palace and Jokhang temple.

Day 6: Lhasa- Gyantse [3950M] 261 KM

Our journey towards Everest starts with the Friendship Highway as it heads out across the plateau. The road first takes us up the Khamba La Pass, [4794m] from which there are stunning views across the waters of in the valley below. We continue over a second high pass the Karo La [5045m] where we stop to view the incredible glaciers that tumble down to the roads edge. After passing through several Tibetan villages we arrive in Gyantse. Overnight Gyantse Hotel.

Day 7: Gyantse [3950M] - Shigatse [3900M] 90KM

Before leaving  we visit the Gyantse Dzong and Gyantse Kumbum. The Dzong is a fort dating from the 14th century and the Kumbum, a large gold-domed stupa with several small chapels. We continue to Shigatse, second largest city in Tibet. Here, we will visit the local market and Tashilhunpo Monastery, one of the largest functioning monasteries in Tibet. Overnight  Hotel.

Day 8: Shigatse [3900M] - Shegar/new Tingri [4050M] 244KM

Continuing across the Tibetan Plateau,  we drive towards the town of Lhatse and up another high pass, the Gyamtso La [5220m]. From here we descend to the plains and on Shegar for our overnight accommodation at Hotel Quomolongma

Day 9: Shegar[4050M] - Rongbuk [5000M] 68KM

Shortly after leaving Shegar, we divert off the Friendship Highway and drive up a total of 42 switchbacks, over the Pang La [5150m]. The view from the top is breathtaking with uninterrupted views of the Himalayas. We stay overnight at the Gompa Guest House

Day 10: Rongbuk Everest Base Camp

We spend a night at Everest Base camp to acclimatise with the stunning view of Everest's north face at our doorstep

Day 11: Rongbuk Everest Base Camp

Acclimatisation day at Everest Base camp, Rongbuk

Day 12: Everest Base Camp to Camp 1 [5460M]

Our trek heads away from base camp towards the east fork of the Rongbuk Glacier, an impressive frozen ocean of ice waves. Along the east side of the glacier is the trail that expeditions use to begin their climbs of Everest and this is the trail we are taking. Camp 1 [5460m] is set amongst moraine hills under towering yellow-orange granite cliffs

Day 13: Trek to Everest Intermediate Camp [5760M]

The trail to Intermediate Camp climbs heads up on the west edge of the glacier. It is a good place to spend a night acclimatizing before advancing to Camp 2. Nearby, the first ice seracs rise like white sails from the dark debris-laden surface of the glacier with Everest rising above

Day 14: Intermediate Camp

We spend a day here for acclimatisation

Day 15: Trek to Camp 2 [5970M]

About two hours above the Interim camp the central ridgeline leads into a massive confluence of ice seracs.  Camp 2 [5970m] is set in a beautiful location surrounded by glaciers in every direction and thus, appropriately named the Seracs Highway

Day 16: Trek to Advanced Base Camp [6340M] and return to Camp 2

Depending on how the group feels, a decision must be made between moving tents up to camp 3 or visiting it as a hike and spending a second night at camp 2.

Camp 3, the advanced base camp for the North Col route up Mount Everest, is situated within a group of flattened gravel mounds beside the glacier. The rock palisades that kept the Northeast Ridge unclimbed for so long, are well within view.  From here, the summit of Everest mountain appears phenomenally close; yet it is little more than 2400 meter higher than advanced Everest base camp, or camp 3. This is the closest non-climbers can get the top of Everest.

Day 17: Return to the Everest Base Camp

The return to Everest Base Camp is a long down hill journey, but if we start out from Camp 2 the journey is a lot quicker.

Day 18: Rongbuk[5000M] - Nyalam 215KM

Today we rejoin the Friendship Highway and drive to Tingri. We then cross a further two high passes, the Lalung La [5124m] and the Shung La [5200m]. From here, we get incredible views of Shishapangma, Cho Oyu, Menlungtse and Gauri Shankar, before descending from the Tibetan Plateau to Nyalam just 30 km before the Nepalese border

Day 19: Nyalam - Kathmandu[1400M] 153KM

From Nyalam we drive the last 30 Kilometres to the Friendship Bridge, which spans the Bhote Kosi River and marks the Chinese - Nepalese border. We say goodbye to the Tibetan guide and driver, pass through Nepalese Immigration Control in Kodari where our Nepalese staff will meet us. We then drive to Kathmandu, which, depending on road and weather conditions, should take about 5 hours.
